I'm a teacher, artist, friend, traveler, husband, father and grandfather to two beautiful and gifted granddaughters. I moved to Ocala from New Hampshire in 1955 when I was 12 years old. I graduated from Ocala High School in 1962. After one fairly undistinguished year at (then) Central Florida Junior College, I joined the US Navy. During my 4-year career, My first duty station was the Naval Air Facility in Naples Italy for two and a half years. I ran the base Special Services Center and was then transferred to a JAG (Judge Advocate General) Legal Group. Later I served on the USS Northampton, CC-1 (the Presidents floating Whitehouse). My final assignment was to run the ships office on the USS Sellers, DDG-11 (a Guided Missile Destroyer).
After being discharged from the Navy, I returned to Ocala and soon married Kay, another Ocala native. I completed my Associates Degree at CFCC, and transferred to the University of South Alabama in Mobile. My wife and I had two children by this time and to make ends meet, I had to work full time as a Police Officer while attending college full time. I was a policeman for 5 years; during this time I earned a Bachelors degree in Art Education, and two Masters degrees, one in Instructional Systems Design and the other in Educational Media.
I then started my career as a Public School Teacher, I taught Art and Photography and I was Head Wrestling Coach and Assistant Track Coach. My Wrestling Team was # 2 in the State of Georgia and the Track Team was # 1 in the State. After 5 years I realized I would never make enough money as a teacher to actually support my family, and I resigned.
I landed a job as a Trainer for a Nuclear Power Plant being built in Kansas. Within 6 months I was promoted to Training Supervisor for the plant. Over the next few years I went to Nuclear Construction projects in Maine, New Hampshire, Indiana, Georgia, and Tennessee. Then to Department of Energy Nuclear Weapons plants in South Carolina, Boulder Colorado and Las Vegas, Nevada.
In 1994, I started my own consulting business, Strategic Learning Solutions. We design traditional and e-learning training programs and blends of the two types of training programs, as well as Quality Assurance consulting.
Since then I've worked on the decommissioning of Nuclear Plants in Maine and Oregon; performed audits and investigations for the Alaska Pipeline; and in New Mexico, I audited the building of storage casks for Russian Nuclear and Chemical Weapons. I also contracted with Kaiser aluminum in Mandeville, Jamaica.
During the last few years my customers have included Department of Defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin (F-16, C-130J and F-22 programs), United Defense (Crusader Tank and Naval Weapons programs), and the Defense Acquisition University (designing e-learning program). In DC, managed teams of trainers at: the Pentagon, the State Department, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
During the past 40 years, Kay and I have lived all over the country, from Maine to Alaska. All total we've lived in 14 different states and two foreign countries. Needless to say, we have friends all over the country and we do enjoy traveling. After all that moving, we ended up right where we began 40 years ago; living in the same house where we were married. Our next adventures will be in a Motor Home.
I'm a long time Mac User, buying my first Mac SE in 1986 and designing training programs using Hyper-Card. For years I had to suffer through living in the PC dominated business world, but now I'm back in the Macintosh world and loving the freedom of not dealing with Windows. I love my new iMac with a 24" screen and in a pinch it can run Windows.
